Vera keeps your numbers on your phone. When you ask a question, your question and your numbers are sent to Vera's server and to Anthropic's Claude to write the answer. Unless you turn it off, Vera keeps a copy of your question and its answer, never your numbers, for 90 days to learn what people ask and make the app better. We never sell your data, show ads, or ask for bank logins.
Who we are
Vera is a personal finance education app made by Arnav Mukherjee, an independent developer in the United States ("Vera," "we," "us").
What you enter
The numbers you choose to enter, such as income, balances, debts, and goals, the country you live in, and any plans you save are stored only on your device. Most fields are optional, and rough numbers are fine.
Vera doesn't connect to your bank or brokerage accounts.
When you ask a question
To answer, the app sends your question, the last few messages of the conversation, and your numbers to Vera's server over an encrypted connection. The server runs Vera's calculators and sends that information to Anthropic, which provides the Claude AI model that writes the answer.
Our server doesn't save your numbers.
Anthropic processes this information as our service provider under its commercial terms, which don't allow it to use the data to train its models. See Anthropic's privacy policy at www.anthropic.com/legal/privacy.
You must agree before your first question is sent, and you can turn this off at any time in the Privacy tab. Without it, the rest of the app still works, but Vera can't answer questions.
Questions we keep to improve Vera
If "Help improve Vera" is on, our server keeps the text of your question and Vera's answer, along with which calculators ran, how long the answer took, the country you chose, the app version, and whether you were using the example numbers. A random ID for each chat lets us read follow-up questions in order; a new one is made for every chat, and it isn't linked to your phone.
We don't keep your numbers, your name, your install ID, your App Attest key, or your IP address with these records. Before anything is stored, the server replaces your first name and tries to remove identifiers such as account numbers, email addresses, and phone numbers, but please don't type them into questions.
We use these records only to understand what people ask and to make Vera's answers better. We don't sell them, use them for advertising, or use them to train AI models. Only Arnav Mukherjee can read them, and they're deleted automatically after 90 days.
"Help improve Vera" is on unless you turn it off, which you can do during setup or at any time in the Privacy tab. Turning it off stops your future questions from being kept. Because the records aren't linked to you, we can't look up yours, but if you email us the date and wording of a question, we'll delete it.
Information that protects the service
The app creates a random install ID. On iPhone it also uses Apple's App Attest to prove that requests come from a genuine copy of the app; our server keeps that key's public half so it can check later requests. These aren't linked to your name or your numbers, and we use them only to apply a daily question limit and block abuse. Your IP address is used briefly for the same purpose.
Our server also keeps basic technical logs: the time of a request, which calculators ran, how long it took, and errors. These logs don't include your questions, your numbers, or the answers.
Where your information is processed
Vera is run from the United States. Wherever you use it, your questions are processed in the United States by Vera's server, which is hosted by Fly.io, and by Anthropic.
Where the law asks for a legal basis, we send your questions to Anthropic with your consent, and we keep questions to improve Vera based on our legitimate interest in making it better, which you can opt out of at any time.
Depending on where you live (for example, the European Union, the United Kingdom, or India), you may have rights to access, correct, or delete your personal information, to withdraw consent, and to complain to a data protection authority. Your numbers live only on your phone, where you can change or delete them, and you can withdraw consent in the Privacy tab at any time. For anything else, email mukherjee.arn@northeastern.edu.
What we don't do
We don't sell or share your information for advertising, track you across other apps or websites, ask for bank or brokerage logins, or need your Social Security number or other government ID.
Vera's server tries to remove common identifiers, such as Social Security and account numbers, before a question is sent to Anthropic, but please don't enter them.
Your choices
You can change your numbers at any time. "Delete my data" in the Privacy tab erases your numbers, saved plans, and settings from your device, and deleting the app does the same.
Turning off "Help improve Vera" stops new questions from being kept. Kept questions are deleted after 90 days, or sooner if you ask.
Children
Vera is for adults 18 and older and isn't directed to children.
Security
Information is sent over encrypted connections (HTTPS). What's stored on your device is protected by your device's security, such as your passcode.
Changes and contact
If we change this policy, we'll update the date above, and we'll ask again before sending your information anywhere new.
